Here, a fashion mogul reveals how the world’s runways have inspired her to earn over $2.5 million year through travel.
A retail veteran, fashion entrepreneur Jance Staten never intended to open a women’s clothes store. After losing her previous work in 2018, she decided to pursue her long-dormant interest in fashion again.
It was never Staten’s plan to become a coach. I certainly didn’t set out to open a boutique. They both came about at the same time, just because people were interested in hearing about my life and my adventures.
Since its inception in November 2018, Brazen Boutique has brought in over $2.5 million for its owner, Staten. Staten has mastered being her own boss and is thus Black Girl Goals thanks to the success of her store, coaching services, and YouTube channel. Her huge success, however, was due solely to the fashion industry.
“Every time I went somewhere, I came back with either a new idea, whether business or personal, a new sense of inspiration, and a new motivation to do anything in my career,” she added.
Staten’s trips were essential in growing her company to a multimillion dollar enterprise. Every journey she took, whether for work or pleasure, widened her circle of contacts and broadened her perspective. As the “point guard” of the business world, fashion relied heavily on “the alley-oop” of travel to achieve their objectives.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Staten is steadily expanding his horizons and expanding his fashion business empire, one city at a time, in a comfortable pair of sweatpants.
Staten’s previous experience was as the manager of a women’s clothes boutique. She had studied rhetoric and public speaking at the university level. She had, however, been employed in the retail sector since she was a teenager. She got into retail management because of her degree and her enthusiasm for the industry.
Staten, on the other hand, said that she was a busy worker during that time. She had no perspective beyond that of an employee and knew nothing about how the fashion business actually functioned. She was a store manager, and she had no idea that this position was actually preparing her for her destiny.
Staten had to take on numerous roles at the shop. She was responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including inventory management, store display, and employee supervision. In fact, it wasn’t until her employer sent her on a business trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District that she began to grasp the sheer breadth of her options.
The experience of Staten’s first trip to the Fashion District forever altered her perspective on the fashion industry. She had never before given much thought to the operational aspects of a boutique. Suddenly, she understood her role as a relatively insignificant cog in a much greater machine.
She explained, “I didn’t have a business attitude before I went there and saw all this possibilities and the type of decisions that have to be made that would eventually effect the organization’s bottom line.”
Her trip to the Fashion District gave her a fresh perspective on the industry. Staten refocused and took control of her own future after the 2018 closure of the shop where she had worked.
As soon as she started working at a boutique, she went online and started posting movies about it. Her willingness to be open and honest about her experience resonated with many people. Slowly but surely, people began contacting Staten for assistance with managing their online stores.
Staten decided to take a chance and open Brazen Boutique in the midst of all this upheaval. Staten helps other business owners by providing coaching services; the brand has made millions since its inception. A simple visit to the Fashion District in the beginning has now grown into a multi-million dollar business.
“I moved from travelling for work for my job to then travelling for myself for the business that I was creating and just understanding there were no limitations to knowledge and no limits to experience,” she explained.
Staten started making an effort to travel promote her products once she opened Brazen Boutique. To increase her clientele and her professional contacts, she attended events and conferences all throughout the country. Over time, her work activities required her to travel more frequently.
She explained that her frequent international travel was essential to her business and her ability to network successfully.
Her attendance at regional and national trade exhibitions was another another way that her wanderlust influenced her business. Staten was able to learn about cutting-edge fashion technology, get sneak peeks at upcoming releases, and network with other business owners at these carefully selected events in cities all over the country, including Dallas, Atlanta, New York, and Las Vegas.
Currently, she has made some of her closest friends through attending events in other cities, trade shows, and the fashion district.
Her attendance at numerous trade exhibitions enabled her to network with potential vendors and keep abreast of emerging trends in the fashion industry. The Dallas exhibition provided a glimpse of western designs, while the New York and Atlanta shows provided the contemporary, upmarket vibes that served as further inspiration. Staten made sure to attend the Las Vegas Magic Show in order to acquire a broad perspective on the industry while she developed her company’s brand. Staten found solace in fashion travel, while other e-commerce firm owners rarely left their homes.
She emphasised the significance of “going outside of your comfort zone and home town to areas with people who understand.”
After each trip, her circle of contacts grew by one more person. She started hanging out with a new group of people who could relate to her plight as a small business owner. Her business and her wealth increased with every trip she funded.
Since establishing her company, Staten has realised that vacation time is an asset. We owe a great deal of Brazen Boutique’s success to the countless new ideas that have sprung from our travels.
There’s a limit to what you can accomplish in your own environment, so getting out of it is a welcome change of pace, she added.
In Staten’s experience, having his home and office in the same building might be stressful. As a result of spending so much time in the same spot, she often struggles to maintain order and finds it difficult to find new inspiration. By getting out of town, she is able to think creatively and strategically for her company. Having a desk in the comfort of one’s own home might be a dangerous temptation. She needs the rejuvenating experience that travel, whether for business or pleasure, provides.
She remarked, “In my perspective, it does a lot of good to be able to go separate yourself from that for a little while.”
She also notes that she is able to come up with fresh ideas for her brand’s social media channels whenever she is away on a trip. Traveling to new places means she can show her online followers something else than the same old stuff. Staten considers her trips an investment in both her company and her future success as an entrepreneur.
Staten values leisure travel just as much as the business trips she does for her brand. She has an insatiable desire to see Mexico and is ready to hop on a plane at the drop of a hat. As a result of prioritising self-care and spending time away from home, she is able to keep her stress levels to a minimum.
This business will not collapse if I step away from it for a week or a few days,” she remarked.
Until Staten was 22, she had never been on an aeroplane. She resolved to ensure she could always afford to travel after her maiden trip to California. She thinks it’s important for Black women to see the world so the rest of us can appreciate how beautiful they are.
It’s important for the world to know that we’re here, she argued. They need to hear from us, I believe. We tend to assume that people will find out about us via social media and the like, but sometimes it’s necessary to have them physically present to get our message over.
Staten believes the world would benefit from encountering the “magic” of black women. It’s not the first time she’s seen someone’s presence captivate an audience. That light must be shared with the whole globe.
She explained, “There’s something thats seeping out of us that makes them pull to us.”
